The San Bernardino City Fire Department members pride ourselves on being an active, well trained department. Our department is one of the busiest in the nation. In June 2005 we will open our twelfth fire station. Our city is committed to staffing all of our apparatus with four firefighters. Our salaries are maintained at an average level by the city charter. Our union members maintain contact with each other through monthly meetings and frequent activities.

The city of San Bernardino always looks to hire the perfect firefighter or paramedic/firefighter. Our requirements have changed in the last few years. Here are some of the requirements on the current job flyer. You can check with the Human Resources for current job openings.

Possession of a Physical Agility Certificate (or equivalent as determined by the Fire Chief) issued by a recognized community college within the last six (6) months or certificate of completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) issued within the past six (6) months.

Must possess a current State of California Paramedic License to perform paramedic duties; within 60 days of employment, must possess a valid accreditation from the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) regulatory body (ICEMA) [Paramedic/Firefighters]

Successful completion of a Basic Firefighter I Academy accredited by California Fire Service Training and Education System-State Fire Marshall’s Office (CFSTES)

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

Within accepted medical standards, weight must be in proportion to height and minimum eyesight requirements: 20/40 uncorrected both eyes, correctable to 20/20 both eyes

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must pass a background investigation and pre-employment medical requirements

Must possess a valid Class “C” California Driver's License. For out-of-state applicants, a valid driver's license is required. A valid Class “C” California Driver's License must be obtained within 10 days of appointment (CA Vehicle Code 12405c)

Must complete probationary paramedic/firefighter training requirements prior to end of probation

Must be certified on one fire engine by the end of the 36th month of appointment, possessing a valid Class “B” F/S California Driver’s License with an “X” endorsement, with a valid medical examiner’s certificate

Must possess current American Heart Association/Red Cross ACLS(Advanced Cardiac Life Support)[for Paramedic/Firefighters] and BLS(Basic Life Support card)
